The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
