Pentagon Report Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
