Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
